U.S. Bank Great Midwest Balloon Fest

Aug 10, 2012 – Aug 12, 2012 4:00 PM

Hot air balloonists from all over the country converge in K.C. for a weekend of family fun!

Live Music, Hot Air Balloon Mass Ascensions, Balloon Glows, Tethered Balloon Rides, Fireworks, the Special Shape Balloons, Food, Beverages, Tons of Kids Activities and SO MUCH MORE!!!!!

The Hot Air Balloon Competitions will happen at sunrise on Saturday and Sunday. Fifty balloon pilots from all over the US will launch and fly into the field from 2-3 miles away. They will perform various tasks such as Target Toss, Pole Grab etc. Pilots compete for both prize money and points at this Balloon Federation of America sanctioned event. Pilots flying in the festival include the Japanese National Champion, the current US National Champion, the current World Champion and most of the members of the 2012 US National Team competing in the World competitions the week after our event.

Thanks to the generosity of sponsor, Olathe Medical Center, the tethered balloon rides this year will only be $5 a person. Weather permitting, kids of all ages can climb into a balloon gondola and ride the tethered balloon from 50-75 feet in the air—without ever flying away. A big thrill for a small price.

For a memorable experience, add a thrilling hot air balloon ride to your “Bucket List.” This 50 minute ride with an experienced pilot will take you up, up and away floating in the clouds and enjoying the magic. The cost is $195 per person (below the national average) and includes champagne and all the trimmings. This special time is perfect for families, anniversaries, newlyweds…just about everyone. Reservations are recommended so please visit our website and click on Balloon Rides.

Friday evening, August 10-Disney TV celebrity singer/songwriter SHEALEIGH for the tweens and under age group. Shealeigh is the recent winner of the “Next Big Thing,” the Disney version of American Idol. She will draw a different demographic group of primarily young girls and their parents to the balloon festival.

Saturday evening, August 11—Country Singing Artist, CLAY WALKER, will perform on the main stage. Clay has eleven hit albums and is well known to country music fans all over the US. He is the recent recipient of the Shell Oil Company Philanthropist of the Year Award. He has raised millions of dollars for Multiple Sclerosis and Wounded Warriors. We are excited to have someone of Clay’s stature perform at our 2012 festival.

A secured area KIDZ ZONE will feature face painting, inflatables, the Kansas City Symphony Instrumental Petting Zoo (instruments, not animals), and a Kid’s Stage with performers for preschoolers and older and professional Radio Disney performers and an Arts and Crafts Tent.

The Kansas National Guard and Fort Riley, Kansas US Army Division I will have interactive attractions including different kinds of military vehicles. The famous Silver Wings Paratroopers from Ft. Benning, Georgia, will jump onto the balloon field. Soldiers from the Kansas National Guard in Topeka will supervise the parking for the event.

Giant Kites, some three stories tall) will fill the skies in the afternoon before the evening Balloon Glow. Ascend Learning is the sponsor for the Giant Kites this year. Kites will be flown by members of the Kansas City Kite Club.

Food vendors include everything from Cajun to Vegetarian to Funnel Cakes—something for everyone! Non-Food vendors include an information tent from the Kansas National Guard, a First Aid tent sponsored by Emergent Care Plus, and an information booth from the Olathe Mayor’s Christmas Tree Fund about their 14 children’s charities. There will also be balloon merchandise to purchase and so much more.
