Confrontation isn’t my style.  Even writing a letter to my senator expressing dismay at various bills getting passed makes me nervous.  But, as I was trying to look something up today, I noticed that HUGE websites including google and wikipedia are protesting the SOPA and PIPA bills that are trying to be passed.  If these huge companies are feeling threatened by an act of congress, I should find out a little more about this.  After having read a bit of background–I too am against having these passed.  As aforementioned-I don’t love writing letters to my senator but it is really easy to sign a petition.  I think this is a big deal. I don’t particularly wish to have the government imposing censorship on the internet.   I copied this explanation from Google–explaining SOPA and PIPA.  If you feel so inclined, go here and add your signature to the petition.

From Google:

Millions of Americans oppose SOPA and PIPA because these bills would censor the Internet and slow economic growth in the U.S.

Two bills before Congress, known as the Protect IP Act (PIPA) in the Senate and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the House, would censor the Web and impose harmful regulations on American business. Millions of Internet users and entrepreneurs already oppose SOPA and PIPA.

The Senate will begin voting on January 24th. Please let them know how you feel. Sign this petition urging Congress to vote NO on PIPA and SOPA before it is too late.
